How We Design Our Plates: Balancing Tradition and Innovation

Jul 8th 2025

At Glow and Clay, each plate begins with more than just clay—it begins with a story. Rooted in centuries-old Moroccan ceramic traditions and guided by the hands of skilled artisans in Safi, our designs walk the line between ancient symbolism and contemporary style.

In this post, we take you behind the scenes of how our plates come to life—from their cultural inspirations to the modern techniques that shape them into timeless pieces.

1. Inspiration from Moroccan Heritage

Our design process starts with the past. We draw deeply from Moroccan visual language—Amazigh symbols, zellige patterns, and Andalusian floral motifs—each carrying centuries of meaning. Whether it's the eight-pointed star symbolizing protection or the fish-scale pattern echoing fertility and abundance, every mark has a voice.

These traditional motifs serve as both inspiration and blueprint for our artisans, who interpret them through their own experience and regional style.

2. Color as Identity

Color isn’t just aesthetic—it’s identity. We blend natural earth tones like terracotta, ochre, and olive with bold, jewel-toned glazes like sapphire, saffron, and emerald. This balance of subtle and vibrant helps our plates stand out in both modern and traditional spaces.

Some collections are made with a purposefully muted palette for minimalist homes, while others feature the bold contrast of historic Moroccan ceramics.

3. Sketching & Prototyping

Once the initial design idea is formed, it’s time to sketch. Some patterns begin with a digital outline, while others are drawn directly onto the raw clay. This phase allows for experimentation—adjusting balance, symmetry, and motif spacing.

We then create hand-thrown prototypes to test how each design interacts with the plate’s form—because in pottery, function and form must dance together.

4. Hand Painting & Glazing

Unlike machine-made ceramics, every Glow and Clay piece is individually hand-painted. Artisans use fine brushes to apply each line and curve with precision, following traditional freehand methods passed down through generations.

After the painting, the plate is glazed—sometimes with a glossy transparent finish, other times with a crackle or matte effect—to enhance the texture and richness of the pattern beneath.

5. Designed for Contemporary Living

Our final designs aren’t just about beauty—they’re about use. We ensure our plates are versatile: dishwasher-safe, food-safe, and equally suitable as functional tableware or decorative art. From concept to kiln, our mission is to bring Moroccan craftsmanship into modern homes without compromising on quality or heritage.

Final Thoughts

Balancing tradition and innovation isn’t a formula—it’s a dialogue. At Glow and Clay, we honor our roots by reimagining them for today. Each plate is a living expression of Moroccan history, transformed by modern vision and everyday function.

When you bring one into your home, you’re not just buying a dish—you’re collecting a story, glazed and fired for the future.
